OpenStudy (ineedhelpnow):

factor the trinomial (or state if prime): check using FOIL. x^2+9x+1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you cannot factor this over the integers

hero (hero):

Prime

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you will not find two integers whose product is 1 and whose sum is 9.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

use completing the square (x+3)^2=8

OpenStudy (ineedhelpnow):

thank you all!

OpenStudy (ineedhelpnow):

so i'm clear, could one of you show me x^2+11x+10?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(x+10)(x+1)

OpenStudy (ineedhelpnow):

is there a shortcut to getting the answers?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do u mean shortcut?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like how to approach the prob?

OpenStudy (ineedhelpnow):

yes.

OpenStudy (ineedhelpnow):

i have NO IDEA where to start

hero (hero):

x^2+11x+10 x^2 + 10x + 1x + 10 x(x+10)+1(x+10) (x+10)(x+1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

u start off by looking at what two numbers multiplied together will give u the number w/o a variable, then u c if those SAME two numbers added together will give u the middle term ie the term with the variable expression...does that make sense?

hero (hero):

Find two numbers that multiply to get 10, and add up to get 11 In general, find two numbers that multiply to get coefficients a*c, and add up to get coefficient b That's the simplest way I know how to describe it without any confusion. If you can't understand that, consult a personal tutor.

OpenStudy (ineedhelpnow):

got it! thanks guys
