? i understand that if you look at it from each axis point you can see that from the x it's going to look like a downwards parabola and same for the y but is there any other way of doing this

nah you have to pretty much have to plug in a bunch of values for x and see what the cross sections look like each time then after a bunch for y and see what those cross sections look like then imagine it... it pretty much looks like a pringle
