Why are the cristae folded?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

They are folded to increase the surface area of the inner membrane. This is important because the large complexes that make up the Oxidative phosphorylation pathway are embedded in this membrane. They are studded with proteins, including ATP synthase and a variety of cytochromes. The maximum surface for chemical reactions to occur is within the mitochondria. This allows cellular respiration (aerobic respiration since the mitochondrion requires oxygen) to occur.
