What is an allegory? :) What is an allegory? :) @Writing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A story that represents a real-life situation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

An allegory is a higher form of a fable and its a story with a hidden message. It can be applied to real life situations.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can there be multiple messages?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I dun think so

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

according to my teacher, no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dun understand why though

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Absolutely. Allegories can be simple (Aesop's fables are allegories for many real-life situations) or have complex layers (Plato's allegory of the cave in The Republic).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohhh... Im stuck writing my allegory. No idea how to start :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am also assigned to write an allegory :D But the starting can be any starting you want it to be the starting of stories. Dialogue , etc

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Follow Aesop. Just put animals in place of people behaving in a situation you've encountered.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh i get it. what do ants represent? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

They can represent anything you want it to be.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

kids in a school

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, i mean what do they symbolise :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but yes anything depends on the story

OpenStudy (anonymous):

normally , they are symbolical of hardworking ppl ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

works for me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah, i think they symbolise diligence etc. :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hahaha normally yah, but in your allegory, they can represent anything you want it to be

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so they do not have a fixed symbol?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yah

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in your allegory, they are anything you want them to be. Mean , kind , anything

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ants can be representative of hard workers, say in a school or factory or office but could also represent a crowd in a park running from danger or running towards a celebrity in the street etc etc etc

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but that might be getting too literal

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol can they like represent diligence? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

allegory must be metaphorical ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

extended metaphor ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes an extended metaphor

OpenStudy (anonymous):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allegory

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Think of your situation first. If you did the right thing, have the animal do the wrong thing to demonstrate the consequences. If you did the wrong thing, have the animal do the same. If the wrong thing is sneaky, make it a fox. If it's mean, make it a bear. If it's untruthful, make it a snake. Their opposites are usually eagles, lions and elephants. These are just stereotypes, but that's what allegories play on.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Allegories play on stereotypes..... oh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can also have one do the right thing and the other the wrong thing. If you're ambitious, it doesn't have to be clear what the right thing is. Do they struggle to figure it out? Do they seek advice from the wise owl?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks people :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hope it goes well

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Allegories play on stereotypes..... oh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

welcome... i didnt help much anyway haha

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Welcome! I just asked questions... so ... isnt really helping either

OpenStudy (anonymous):

stimulating discussion usually helps

OpenStudy (anonymous):

asking questions helps others too

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Allegories play on stereotypes..... oh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hey people, i have another question..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What are some animals that symbolize laziness? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cats, the sloth

OpenStudy (anonymous):

bear maybe

OpenStudy (anonymous):

turtle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh thanks :) cats fit my allegory :D
