Atopic Dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition, aka eczema.  

The general approach involves 
- eliminating any factors that worsen the condition
- keeping the skin well hydrated
- using antihistamines to control the itching
- therapies for inflammation and
- management of infection

Steroid creams are the mainstay for therapy of this skin condition.  The strength can range from low potency to high potency depending on the severity of the flare-up.  Caution is used with these because long-term use can cause the skin to atrophy.  For this reason, high potency steroid creams are not used on the face or skin folds.

If you have flareups in these areas, you then use Calcineurin Inhibitor creams.  These creams do not have that skin thinning side effect and therefore are safe on your face and skinfolds.

Lastly, if the eczema gets so bad that you develop an infection on top of the skin condition, treatment with topical or oral antibiotics is indicated.
