Hi every one, I have 15 minutes to answer this question, do you know if I want to round 11.55, what't the final answer, pls help Hi every one, I have 15 minutes to answer this question, do you know if I want to round 11.55, what't the final answer, pls help @Mathematics

OpenStudy (anonymous):

11.55 if rounded to one decimal place it would be 11.6 and if to two decimal places it would be 12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I tried 11.6, let me try 12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

As sheg said, it depends how many decimal places you want to end up with. When you round, you round the digit up if the following digit is equal to or greater than 5, and down otherwise.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Express your answer using two significant figures. =11.55 Try Again; 2 attempts remaining Feedback Very close. Check the rounding and number of significant figures in your final answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, two significant figures. Then it's 12.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do you know it's 2 !!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because 11.55 to two significant figures is 12.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh sryyyyyy it's already saying that, I'm so tired didn;t read carefully

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so whenever we get 5 we round it up ?!

OpenStudy (lilg132):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if it is higher than five like 11.57 rounding off will be 11.6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

omg the 12 is wrong too

OpenStudy (anonymous):

as 11.6 is having after decimal 6 greater than 5 so rounded off to 12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, if rounding is required. But significant figures is slightly different. Rounding to 3 decimal places means you end up with 3 figures after the decimal. Three significant figures means there are a total of three significant figures, regardless of the position of the decimal place. Eg. 12.1 135 0.154 Are all three significant figures.

OpenStudy (lilg132):

let me try and explain 11.55 so what you do is you start from the last number which is 11.55 now we round it up because it is 5 so it will turn to 11.6 if we still want to round that up then 6 will get rounded up because it is bigger then 4 so it will turn to 12 Remember anything that is above 4 should get rounded up e.g. 5,6,7,8,9 anything that is 4 and below will get rounded down e.g. 4,3,2,1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hey is ur question how many significant digits are in 11.55??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because if that's the question, then it's 4 =)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah in this question we having 4 significant figures and 2 in-significant figures

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm getting crazy I tried everythings but it doesn't work ... 11.4 11.40 11.5 11.6 11.60 11.70 none of these worked

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What's the EXACT question, verbatim? What sheg is saying is that if it's asking for how many significant figures are in 11.55, then the answer is 4 (not 11.4, just 4).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah u r ryt buddy @ few

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Express your answer using two significant figures. =11.5 Try Again; 2 attempts remaining Feedback Very close. Check the rounding and number of significant figures in your final answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

tha's a question also with feedback

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then it is 12 !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I tried 12, it's not

OpenStudy (lilg132):

did u try 11.6?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Try 12. As "12." including the .

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is that !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

12. If you put a decimal place in it indicates an exact number of significant figures. 12. means two significant figures, regardless of how else it is rounded.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know it sounds silly if you're not familiar with significant figures, but it is true =)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm canfuse, I tried 12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

12. is different to just 12 when talking about significant figures.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that's stuped the answer was 11, but thank you guys ... if you see 11.55, you have to round it to 11, when you see 5 you have to round it down not up

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What?! That is is absolutely ridiculous, never would 11.55 be rounded down to 11.

OpenStudy (lilg132):

well when i was in school they did say you can do either but i've always stuck to rounding up so i can see why it accepted 11

OpenStudy (anonymous):

http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=11.55+to+2+significant+figures WolframAlpha agrees with the absurdity of that outcome :-P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hey fewscrewmissing is ur name a number of people sud have that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hahaha.
