What is a power?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It is the derivative of work with respect to time.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think he means a power as an exponent

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a power is a one to one bijunction or something :-P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i am confused?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What does derivative mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its a type of financial instrument

OpenStudy (anonymous):

simply, the power is an operand within the exponentiation operation. When it is a positive integer, it coressponds to repeated multiplication.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay. ummmm What is a power?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Power is the name of cricketing bat manufacturing company which Sachin and Brain Lara used..........lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you want to write 5*5*5*5*5*5. It is convenient to write it as 5^6. Or 4*4*4... x times, we can write it as 4^x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2^3, the power is 3. power is a synonym for exponent

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a couple of simple sentences please.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but sometimes we say 'power ' function, i believe that means y = ax^b

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is a power just that small number. or the base and the exponent? cause i think its both. not sure though

OpenStudy (anonymous):

, a power function is y = a x^n , but an exponential is y = a*b^x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the power is just that little number.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Power is the number written above, not both

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay! thanks! then what are the big number and small number called together?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And by the way How do you describe exponentially?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are together they called an exponent?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

exponent is just another name for power.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so then what are the big and small number called together?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the whole thing together is called a number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ha ha okay...... and a power is a unit, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in physics

OpenStudy (anonymous):

even better: it's called an expression, or a symbol.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and do you know the answer to this? How do you describe exponentially?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is a power a unit in math too?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

an expression, thanks!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what to describe exponentially?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nope. Math is unitless

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oooooh really cause my math teacher said "Powers are units".

OpenStudy (anonymous):

maybe he meant positive integers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

maybe

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im not sure. my math is mostly in german. :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and by the way. How do you describe exponentially?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What to describe exponentially?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you wave your hands and say something like 'this thing grows exponentially!'

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so if something grows exponentially, it grows like an exponent. for example. 2 to the fourth power "grows exponentially?"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you say that y depends on x , then we say y is growing exponential as x increases y = a*b^x, for some b>0 , a!=0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes; when people describe a function as 'growing exponentially', they mean that the graph resembles the graph of an exponential function, with it's value proportional to some constant base to some variable power.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that sort of made sense. thank you!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so if you have a bank account that doubles every month , let y be the amount total, and suppose you start with a principle of $5. y = 5*2^t
