Hello misspowell26 :) In the chat-room, I found that you need help with the following: What factors lead us to conform and become obedient? - Aggressive behavior and aggression cues - Pro-social behavior - Relationship building, love, and attraction Group Dynamics – What are elements of a group? - Types of groups - consequences of Groupthink - Social dilemmas I may not have enough time to respond to everything that you have mentioned above, but I will do my best to write as much as I can. To be in the clear, I got my B.A. in Psychology and Social Psychology was one of my favorites : ) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Obedience – we usually become obedient in cases when we need to follow certain rules or laws. For instance, if we know that breaking a certain law puts us in jail, we will probably restrain ourselves from taking that particular action. This is when we “obey” the law(s). Same thing with obeying the authority, when –let’s say -stopped by the police while driving –a regular citizen will take the instructions/orders given by the policeman –e.g. “please step out of the car”, “please give me your ID and license”, “open your trunk”. Another type of obedience which can raise controversy among many is the obedience to God (or gods). Believers of religions like Christianity will follow the rules set by God in order to avoid going to hell or in order to get into heaven. Many Christians also have high obedience to their Church –they will for example confess their sins to the priest in order to be able to attend the Holy Communion. The Church will actually criticize anyone who attends the Holy Communion without confessing their sins first. In many countries, citizens even follow the political advice given by the Church –like what party should people vote for, which party corresponds to the ideals of the religion etc [and trust me: people do listen…]. Conformity – it is when people follow the unwritten rules of the society which they live in. It all comes down to the perception which we have of the environment that we revolve in. In majority: people want to fit in, they do not want to stand out. In many societies men are supposed to have short hair, whereas women are supposed to have longer hair. Many consider short hair to be pretty “manly” and long hair to be simply… feminine. [To stay “in the clear” here: I am not writing about the general population, I am not generalizing, but giving examples of how things CAN BE] Now, what is a worldwide phenomenon, which is much more serious than hair length are the gender roles. The stereotype of a girl: she is supposed to be gentle, caring, sensitive; she is seen as a potential mother, wife. For years, women in the United States were meant to be housewives –it was the man’s responsibility to work and earn money. It took years for women to break this pattern. But even nowadays, a woman is expected to abandon her career in order to raise a family. Women who are more career not family-oriented are very often looked down at, whereas men have the utmost right to focus solely on their careers. [Gender roles – it is a topic which you could really develop further in your paper]

For Groupthink, look into the conclusions that Irving Janis came up with. Use him as your source. Can you tell me if you are using any Social Psychology book for this?
