what are some good idea to disscus about :Why do prescription medications cost so much more in U.S.???
Pharmaceutical companies can make a very good topic for a discussion. You know, there are so many theories. Like... on the one hand: a lot of medicines they make actually save lives (e.g. a diabetic person with insulin injections for instance). But on the other hand, they will not release any medicine that could actually cure a person, because that would mean "less money" for the company. So? Are those the good guys, or the bad guys?
If you like my answer, please give me a medal : ) After all, a good answer deserves one, right? : )))
Meds in the US cost so much because of our patent laws - when you create a medication you own the rights to it for a number of years (between 7-12 years). Most of these medications are not developed for the use they are finally put into production to treat. This contributes to a secondary phenomena: the medicating of side effects. Most medications have serious side-effects...the results of which are usually solved...but medicating the side-effects. This compounding cost structure is one of the main reasons why seniors have such huge expenses on their medications.
