Ax+By=C

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hi Chris I am still having strouble...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y = -1x/2 + 1 y -1 = -1x/2 2y -2 = -x 2y+x -2 = 0 8y + 4x -8 = 0

myininaya (myininaya):

this looks weird m=-1/2 and b=1 is that what we are looking at y=mx+b y=-1/2 *x+1 1/2 *x+y=1 x+2y=2

OpenStudy (chriss):

yeah, I got what myininaya got

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright So the equation you use is y-y1=m(x-x1)

myininaya (myininaya):

and we got what moneybird got just add 8 on both sides and divide by 4 on both sides

myininaya (myininaya):

i used y=mx+b as i stated above

OpenStudy (chriss):

no, the standard form is the Ax+By=c so the answer is x+2y=2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks.

OpenStudy (chriss):

oh.. and yeah, you start with y=mx+b just like myinimaya said.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Haha, Ok Input in standard form the equation of the given line.The line with m = -3/8 and passing through (5, -4)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y=mx+b

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no I think this is y-y1=m(x-x1)

OpenStudy (chriss):

yes, start with y=mx+b, plug in m, x, and y and solve for b.

OpenStudy (chriss):

-4=(-3/8)(5)+b

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y-y1=m(x-x1) is the point-slope form. it's just another way to write the linear equation

myininaya (myininaya):

\[y=mx+b \] m is -3/8 \[y=\frac{-3}{8}x+b\] we know a point on the line (5,-4) => x=5, y=-4 plug that in to figure out what b is \[-4=\frac{-3}{8} (5)+b \] \[-4+\frac{3}{8} \cdot 5=b\] \[-4+\frac{15}{8}=b \] \[\frac{-32+15}{8}=b\] \[b=\frac{-17}{8}\] so the equation is \[y=\frac{-3}{8}x+\frac{-17}{8}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-4=-15/8+b

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-3x-17=y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In standard form??

OpenStudy (chriss):

3x+8y=-17

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh yea sorry..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Input in standard form the equation of the given line.The line that passes through (-3, 5) and (-2, -6) Here I first find the slope of the equation. Then, do I still use the y=mx+b or do I use the other one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-33x-5y=?

OpenStudy (chriss):

I would find the slope, just like you say, then use one set of your coordinates in y=mx+b to find your b, then convert the y=mx+b form to standard form.
