What is an algebra?

OpenStudy (lukecrayonz):

The part of mathematics in which letters and other symbols are used to represent numbers and quantities in formulae and equations.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What about structures?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What about operations between those mathematical objects?

OpenStudy (lilg132):

what about it :p

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that's not included in Lukecrayonz description of algebra :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

According to some random book I have, and Algebra can be considered as a vector space over a field, where there is an operation of "multiplication". The operation must be associative, distributive with respect to addition, and scalars from the field can roam freely throughout the multiplication.

an*

Dont think of it as a normal vector space though, because there is no such thing as "x*y" with regular vectors.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so in relational algebra our multiplication would be the cartesian product between two relations?
