Can anyone describe the cell cycle?
The cell cycle consists of four stages. The first stage, prophase is the longest. The chromosomes become visible at this time. The centrioles separate and take up positions on opposite sides of the nucleus. They help organize the spindle that helps separate the cell. The nucleus dissapears and the nuclear envelope breaks down. During metaphase, the second phase, the chromosomes line up across the center of the cell. Microtubules connect the centromere of each chromosome to the 2 poles of the spindle. During anaphase, the third phase, the sister chromotids separate into individual chromosomes and are moved apart. Then, during telophase, the chromosomes gather at opposite ends of the cell and lose their distinct shapes. Two new nuclear envelopes will form, ergo two new cells.
