name all the sphincters along the gastrointestinal tract
The upper esophageal sphincter is the first sphincter of the G.I. tract, found at the bottom of the pharynx where the esophagus begins. The lower esophageal sphincter (or cardiac sphincter due to its anatomical location) separates the esophagus from the stomach. At the other end of the stomach is the pyloric sphincter, which periodically opens to allow partially digested food (chyme) into the small intestine. The ileocaecal valve may be characterized as a sphincter and separates the small intestine from the large intestine. There are also two sphincters that control the excretion of feces - the inner and outer anal sphincters, which are involuntary and voluntary respectively.
