best way to try and get a piece published or even considered for publishing like steps and stuff.

In case of a book: usually, a publishing house will encourage you to send them three chapters and the synopsis. After that, they whether contact you or not.

If it is a piece like an article or short story, try to google up the type of magazines and newspapers that might be interested in it. If it is a novel, then get a really, really sharp proposal (an email stating what its about) and send it out to a LARGE number of publishing agencies. Maybe one or two will respond, and in that case, they will ask you for what they want. Usually around 30 pages or so. Look up advice on how to branch out to these agents and publishing houses online, there's lots of info out there that you will want to know. Like resumes, a good, brief bit of info on what your novel brings to the table can get you in the door. Expect rejection and make sure to have a macro approach. If you're serious, then contact 30 or 40 different people, both agents and publish houses, once you have REALLY developed a strong first offering. Good Luck!

Over the summer, I was fortunate enough to attend a creative writing workshop. I met a few authors, and they gave us all advice on getting started in the writing business. They all recommended getting an agent, and letting that agent find you a publisher. On the flip side, there's always self-publishing, which I don't know much about but I think you can do it through amazon. If you're interested in self-publishing, you should do some research on it. :P If you'd rather do the searching on your own, send a message out to as many publishers as you can. You can do this by finding ways to contact them on their individual websites. Make sure you perfect your piece of work before sending it. If one of the publishers is interested, they will contact you back, most likely asking for a summary of your story or a few chapters to read. If they like what they see, they'll probably ask you for the entire piece of work! Google is a pretty freaking awesome tool. You should do some research on publishing and see which publishing method is the best for you. :) If your piece of work gets rejected at first, don't throw the whole thing away and give up. Perserverance is the key to being a successful writer. I wish you the best of luck in your writing career! :)
