If we have “win xp” installed on partition “C”, and then we've installed “win server” on partition “D”, now at computer startup we should see two options to select from : either launch the “xp” OS or the “server” OS..... If we have formatted the partition “C” and reinstalled “win xp”, The computer will automatically start the “win xp” OS, we will not have two options at computer startup; but we have a “win server” still installed on “D”, but you can’t launch it. How can you solve this problem without reinstalling “win server”?

is it homework question?

Is it a problem ? D: I tried to look at the boot file but found nothing Tried to google it and found nothing ! So any Help or hint ? :)

OpenStudy (farmdawgnation):

Well, you'll need to reconfigure a bootloader on the C: drive. This can be done one of two ways. 1. Install another copy of Windows on C:, then follow instructions online to change the boot options so you can boot from D: 2. I also believe you can use a recovery CD to change the boot sector on C. If D: is a different physical drive, you may be able to make a change to your BIOS settings to boot straight to D. However, if it's just a partition that won't work. Either way - the problem is that you have a boot sector that's not configured for dual boot - and that's what you need to fix.

If you go the route of installing Windows on C: again, then you just need to edit the boot.ini file. You'll probably add a line like this to the bottom: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Windows Server" /fastdetect Source: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/289022
