Hi everyone. I'm an ESL teachet in Colombia, South America and I would like to know the difference between "sit" and "sit down" if there is any. If you could provide me with a couple of examples in context I'd much appreciate it. Thanks so much.

Sit down includes a directional detail and associates with a more intentional stop.  There is also the saying "are you sitting down?" that leads to a statement of something serious or shocking news and then a discussion.

Sit down is also used in describing a sit down meal meaning a more formal dinner where people sit at the table to be served (or dishes are passed around) versus a casual reception and/or buffet where people stand and serve themselves.  Fast food restaurants are self-serve and the customer takes away their own food  to find their own seating.  A sit down restaurant is where waiters serve you.

1. Situation where there is no difference: Tom asked me to sit.  = Tom asked me to sit down.  or 
Imperative tense: "Sit" said the teacher.  = "Sit down" said the teacher. Same.
2. Different meanings.  Cannot use one instead of the other.  We are going to a sit down dinner.  (We will be seated, it is not a buffet style).  Cannot say, We are going to a sit dinner.
