in box and whisker plots, do you draw a line to the outliers (as your whisker)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or do you just plot a point, but don't draw a line to it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes You Do

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You draw lines to both outlier points, single lines, not dotted

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are your outliers also your lowest or highest quartile?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i mean lower extreme and higher extreme

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, outliers are first and last numbers

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not quartile

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Check this out, http://ellerbruch.nmu.edu/cs255/jnord/three.gif

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

No, the whiskers only extend so far and outliers may be single solitary points

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it just me or is this kind of solving this question somewhat of a pain

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so you don't draw lines to the outlier?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

See the picture, the ihghest and lowest number, also known as extremes, get points on them and lines drawn to them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but the outliers, like ones that are way lower than the low quartile or way higher than the high quartile, do you draw lines to those? Those are the lower and higher extremes

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

It depends how far the outlier is, but the whiskers will not always connect

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how far is too far for the outleir? like 1.5 times the interquartile range right?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yeah that sounds right (I'd need to look it up), but take a look at something like this http://media.texample.net/tikz/examples/PNG/box-and-whisker-plot.png

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks, that makes sense now :)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you'll see that the outliers are on their own

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
