What is gene crossing?
i believe it is when you cross the genes of one organism with another, like hybridization.
For example, some companies specialize in crossing flowers...I've seen a yellow (I think) spotted flower that was bred from a spotted white flower and a yellow flower. This new flower was considered a hybridization, and was called the leopard orchid or something.
I think it's when genetic information is exchanged from one chromosome to another.
Homologous chromosomes line up side by side and swap chromosome arms, basically.
Remember the punnet square? Its like that were gene chromosomes are passed from the parents to offspring there it determines what the offspring will develop from the parents
Genetic recombination, guys!
I thought that that was a different term...like prophase one of meiosis. I suppose that could be 'gene crossing' too.
I would think that gene crossing is referring to punnet squares...
Crossing over refers only exchange of genetic material between homologous chromosomes. It has nothing to do with plant hybridization, in my opinion anyway.
Punnet square is just determining the result of gene crossing its not gene crossing itself
wouldn't it be crossing the genes of two plants together?
It doesn't have anything to do with Punnett squares, either. Although if part of a chromosome gets exchanged in a gene crossing event, it might affect the allele ratios seen in various crosses. Actually, those problems are the bane of graduate students in classical genetics....
