is (2, -3) a solution of y = x + 5? I got x = -8. Correct???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its not a solution

OpenStudy (slaaibak):

you are correct. (2, -3) is not a solution

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no the answer is 7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x = -8 is not the right way to think of it. Plug x and y values into the equation. You get: -3 = 2+5, which is never true. So, not a solution.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its a yes or no question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thank you

OpenStudy (slaaibak):

GT, I don't see a problem if she only plugged in y value. if she didn't get 2, it's obvious that it's not a solution.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For a point to be a solution to an equation like the one you have, it must satisfy the equation. For example, if you had a point (2,7), it would satisfy the equation when you plug in as follows 7 = 2 + 5, which is clearly true.

slaaibak - agree. many ways to come at math problems.
