Which measurement is a possible side length for a triangle with two sides measuring 13 cm and 29 cm?

hero (hero):

Where's saruz?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6 cm 18 cm 42 cm 66 cm

OpenStudy (matt101):

It could be any of those...does it say what kind of triangle it is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am here hero

hero (hero):

Do you have a shortcut solution to this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

answer is 18

hero (hero):

I guess that answers the question, but what are the shortcut steps?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

answer is always between 13+29 and 29-13

OpenStudy (mathteacher1729):

Well the biggest the third side could be would be JUST UNDER (13 cm + 29 cm). The smallest the third side could be would be JUST OVER (29 cm-13 cm). That's because the sum of the shortest sides of the triangle must be LONGER than the third side. Think of it this way. If you have a 1 foot ruler and a one foot ruler, can you connect them to stretch any longer than 3 feet?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so only one possible is 18

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i will draw and show

OpenStudy (matt101):

Haha well there you go I learned something :)

hero (hero):

I know how to do it but I was just looking for a shortcut
