how do i simplify? 2(x-6)+x(5+2)-7x+4? do i need to multiply 2 & x then 2 & 6? then x & 5then x & 2?

OpenStudy (mathteacher1729):

You can simplify 2(x-6) the way you described: 2x -12 But x(5+2) .. just add 5 and 2. :) 7x.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and what about 7x+4? i leave it how it is?

OpenStudy (lilg132):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the final answer is written like this? 2x-12+7x-7x+4?!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cant i cancel out the 7x's?

OpenStudy (lilg132):

so when you expand the brackets you should get 2x - 12 +7x - 7x + 4 and to simplify just put it in order 2x + 7x - 7x + 4 - 12 so you should get 2x - 8 dont forget to click on good answer :)

OpenStudy (mathteacher1729):

That's not quite it, but you're close. Collect all the x terms: +2x +7x -7x Collect the constant terms: -12 +4

OpenStudy (lilg132):

yes thats what happens after expanding you cancel out the 7x
