can someone help me understand how "like" & "unlike" terms work?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whaen addind like terms like 2x+3y+2x-2y what you do is collect all terms or add all x terms and all y terms. so it will be 2x+2x+3y-2y which will give me 4x+y. hope I was clear

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you can not add unlike terms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you can add them or subtract they are like terms if youcant they are not like terms?!! yes?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so you can not add apples and bananas. thats correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well if you have 2x+2y you can not add them because they are unlike terms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are you still there

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

did you understand

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for 2x+2y you cant add them becuz of the x & y right? theyre different? but if they bother had 2 x's and no y's then they are like terms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

did i get that right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

*both

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):
