Need some help its a bit much..

hero (hero):

You Need Skype

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hero u said no already! and i know gosh! ur like my daddy always telling me what i need lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hero im desperate

hero (hero):

I never said "no"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know.. but im just so stupid when it comes to math... could u help me do these things?

hero (hero):

I can't really help you with these kinds of problems on here because OS is too limited. There are no good ways to plot graphs or functions on here.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what help do u need

hero (hero):

It can be done, and you can get help on here. I'm just saying that there are easier and better methods of communication than OS can provide right now.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y = negative 1 over 3x + 3 –x + 3y = 9 Type the first equation from the group you selected and identify the slope and the y-intercept of the equation. Describe how you would graph this line using the slope-intercept method. Be sure to write in complete sentences.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

AND THERE IS MORE..

OpenStudy (preetha):

Hero, can you just free hand draw it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y=x/3+3 y=mx+c this implies slope, m=1/3 intercept, c=3

hero (hero):

That's exactly what I don't want to do because the tools on here are so poor.

hero (hero):

OS needs to upgrade their drawing platform

hero (hero):

I think if I had a tablet PC, it would be a little more tolerable

hero (hero):

Drawing with a mouse is just not very good for me

OpenStudy (preetha):

Hmm. I'll pass this along.

hero (hero):

By the way, adding a typing function to the drawing platform would also be a good idea

hero (hero):

There should be a way to add text to it. It shouldn't be limited to just drawing only. I mean, in my mind, the drawing platform should really be a graphing tool. Literally.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How would i graph this? using the slope intercept method??

OpenStudy (chris):

Hi Hero, thanks for the feedback - what would you do if you were on skype? i.e. - do you think A. Creating the graph on your computer and taking a screenshot would suffice? B. do you think screenshare would be best or C. Do you think we need a graphing tool above A/B?

hero (hero):

Actually, skype has a screen sharing function so I am able to share my screen and "in real time" show students how to solve problems step by step.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@lucky how would i graph that using the slope intercept method?

hero (hero):

Also, not to mention the "voice" tool which is used to explain things as I'm showing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?????????????????????????????

hero (hero):

But I wouldn't have to go that far if OS drawing platform was upgraded to a graphing tool. It doesn't even have a way for you to type words in it as you're drawing. And the ability to create a decent graph is difficult and limited

OpenStudy (pokemon23):

hi hero do you want my Skype

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I wouldn't mind some help>> lol

hero (hero):

Some things can be explained better using other tools that OS doesn't yet have

hero (hero):

Sorry @iloveboys. I'm talking to the CEO of Open Study

OpenStudy (pokemon23):

I might need you to explain me something in the future

OpenStudy (chris):

Ok, got it. I'm trying to find the best lowest common denominator here to cover 80% of the use cases. We were hoping that file attachment was enough. This is great feedback - I'm now wondering how many users have skype (e.g. you can click on someone's profile and skype them, or there is a platform called tokbox that's wanting to work with us that does it all in browser). It would be great to record such interactions so they become part of the answer - not just real-time.

OpenStudy (chris):

Definitely solutions for that, quite a bit of effort - perhaps worth the reward.

hero (hero):

That would be amazing if it were to happen. Students would definitely get more effective help. Particularly with using the screen sharing feature. I also use a program called microsoft one note to help show students things using the writing and drawing tools it has. You should check it out. It's a great program if you don't already know about it.

OpenStudy (chris):

Ok man, thanks for that. I've seen one note but will take another look. I'll bring up screen share/recording with the rest of the team, and we'll see if there's someone we can work with that makes it a bit easier.

OpenStudy (chris):

or rather, faster to implement.

OpenStudy (chris):

On another note - what do you think of the rewards system on OpenStudy. For answerers, right now we primarily have medals and fans. Are there any other mechanics that you envision (or characteristics of the community) that you think would better motivate people that predominantly help others?

hero (hero):

I'm using the 2010 version. It's much better than the 2007 version. Oh and by the way, there were a couple of other minor suggestions that I made that got ignored. One was changing the button that says "good answer" to "good solution". I think doing that would encourage posters to provide more detailed solutions when actually assisting students with questions. Another thing is adding an "edit" button for these posts, not just a "delete" button. As far as motivating thing, I have thought about it before, but I'd have to get back to you on it because I have been a little busy and pre-occupied with other thoughts and other things, but I know I have a good suggestion buried within me somewhere.

hero (hero):

I appreciate you taking interest in my suggestions.

OpenStudy (preetha):

Thanks Hero. Good to have you on board!

OpenStudy (pokemon23):

Nj

OpenStudy (chris):

Yeah man - really thank you. Most suggestions aren't ignored, but feedback is something we're trying to tighten up. I like the solution/edit suggestions. Once you've had time to think about rewards a bit more, or have other suggestions, can you please email Preetha and I personally (firstname.lastname@openstudy.com - we filled them out in the profile).

OpenStudy (chris):

BUT - while I have you here.

OpenStudy (chris):

Are you familiar with sites like Stack Overflow and/or github?

hero (hero):

Not yet, but soon will be. What about them?

OpenStudy (chris):

Well, employers and college admissions are starting to take the "social capital" (street cred) that people earn on collaboration sites pretty seriously. For example when I'm hiring an engineer, usually I ask for their stackoverflow or github accounts to see demonstrations of their coding knowledge or skills.

OpenStudy (chris):

We've had some interest from employers and admissions people regarding the profiles learners are building on OpenStudy, as a demonstration of employability/"a good student"

OpenStudy (chris):

A. Does that kind of motivation interest you? B. Had you thought of it before I just mentioned it? C. What could we do better to let you show off?

hero (hero):

Interesting

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hi hero?

hero (hero):

It definitely interests me and yes, I have thought about it before. As a matter of fact, I should probably fix my profile so that its more appropriate. I think that might be the next big project that OS can work on. Basically, coming up with collective ideas on how to build everyone's profile so that it accurately reflects their talents and achievements on OS and in real life. And I believe that providing public access to these profiles as well as highlighting the top profiles of each major group would be a great thing for everyone, students, teachers, programmers, etc.

OpenStudy (chris):

Ok great. When you have time, would you mind adding your ideas to that email we discussed? In particular, interested in your definition of this statement: "build everyone's profile so that it accurately reflects their talents and achievements on OS and in real life"

hero (hero):

I definitely will because I wanted to add another critical suggestion, but I will save it for the email because I believe it is important that I explain it fully so that you understand it better. Thank you once again for listening to my ideas. I really appreciate it.

OpenStudy (chris):

Yeah Hero, feeling is mutual. We're here to build a better OpenStudy, and we're thankful when our users help us do it. Thanks again. Look forward to your email. I'll see you around.

hero (hero):

Bye Chris :D

OpenStudy (chris):

Later man =)
