3x+2+x<1+2x-7

OpenStudy (mathteacher1729):

How far were you able to go with this problem before getting stuck?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2x<-9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3x+2+x<1+2x-7 4x+1<2x+-6 4x+1-1<2x-6-1 4x<2x-7 4x<-7-2x 4x-2x<-7 2x<-7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so x = -7/2right ?

OpenStudy (mathteacher1729):

3x+2+x<1+2x-7 4x+1<2x+-6 ERROR :( should be ... 4x +2 < 2x -6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh sorry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it would be 2x<-8 -8/2

OpenStudy (mathteacher1729):

x < -4

OpenStudy (mathteacher1729):

Visually you can see this by going to http://www.wolframalpha.com and typing plot 3x+2+x, 1+2x-7 Note that at x = -4 the functions cross and it is precisely after x = -4 where y = 3x+2+x is less than y= 1+2x-7.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay . so as a interval notation I would put (4,infinity]

OpenStudy (mathteacher1729):

negative four. And the infinity would have a ")" instead of a "]" because you can't include infinity in an interval.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so, (4,infinity) ?
