Simplify the following expression; express in terms of i. Squareroot -54

OpenStudy (cathyangs):

ok, do you know how to simplify radicals?

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

3isqrt6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nope

OpenStudy (hoblos):

3i sqrt6

OpenStudy (cathyangs):

would you like to learn?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes please

OpenStudy (cathyangs):

ok, so: lets say we have a radical number, sqrt54 54 is made of 9*6 9 is also 3*3, so the squareroot of 9 is 3. you can "Pull out" the square roots of numbers from under the radical sign, so sqrt54 would become 3sqrt6 for this question, because it's sqrt-54, you have to think of i. i is the square root of -1, just like 3 is for 9. You can pull out 3i from this equation, which is the squareroot of -9. this leaves you with 3isqrt6. do you get it? :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes I do thank you it was very understandable now that it was explained to me

OpenStudy (cathyangs):

Glad to help! :D
