factorise : x^2 - 2x -35?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

x^2 - 2x - 35 x^2 - 7x+5x - 35 (x^2 - 7x)+(5x - 35) x(x-7)+5(x-7) (x+5)(x-7) So x^2 - 2x - 35 completely factors to (x+5)(x-7)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Note: -7 and 5 add up to -2 and multiply to -35

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[(x-7) (x+5) \]

>Note: -7 and 5 add up to -2 and multiply to -35 This is how I'd factor it. I know my answer will look like ( x +/- something) times ( x +/- something else) And since -7 and +5 fit the bill... the factorization is just (x -7) times (x+5) . Always remember to "foil" out your answer to make sure your solution is correct. :)
