write an equation for the line that is perpendicular to the given line and that passes through the given point. y=6x-2;(0.0)

OpenStudy (matt101):

The slope of the line y = 6x - 2 is 6. A line that is perpendicular to it would have a slope that is the negative reciprocal, which is -1/6. The equation for the perpendicular line can be expressed as y = mx +b. We have the slope, m, and the question gives a point, so we have x and y. Therefore plug in the values and solve for b: 0 = (-1/6)(0) + b b = 0 The general equation for the line is therefore y = (-1/6)x
