What do you mean? The pole of a magnet usually referrs to the direction in which most of the magnetic dipoles in the material point. A permanent magnet is formed of some material with tiny current loops. However, magnetic fields don't require magnets. Light, for example is a combination of electric fields and magnetic fields. When you say the magnet is approaching, I assume a bar magnet coming towards another magnet. In this case, the poles of opposite magnatization will attract.
