a sports outlet recieved 80 baseball gloves. there were four times as many tan gloves as black. how many gloves of each color were in the shipment? write an equation and solve.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hi there. Do you need help solving this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok let's call X the number of black cloves. there are 4 times as many tan gloves, so, how would you write that in terms of X?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do you write "4 times X"?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would you do 4x=80

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The sum of black gloves (X) and tan gloves (4x) is 80. How would you write that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4x+x=80?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok the you solve it and it would be

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you tell me; how do you solve?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would you add the xs so it would be 4 times 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes you add the x's, but where do you get 4 times 2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would you multiply 4 and 2 or add them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

where are you getting a '2' from?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you add 4x and x, what do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

huh? where do you get 6 from?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

doesnt one x equal 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

"x" is the same as "1x".

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so tboth of the xs would equal 2 right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4x + 1x does not equal 6x. Replace "x" with the word "marble". What do you get when you combine 4 marbles with 1 marble?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, so 4x + x = ...?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so wait would the equation be 5x =80

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then the answer would be hold on

OpenStudy (anonymous):

16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you help me on another one please

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you haven't solved the first one completely yet. x=16 so what does that mean in terms of the original question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

isnt it 16 gloves

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh just kidding

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there are 2 colors of gloves and they want to know how many of each

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it 16 black and 64 tan gloves

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you got it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now will you help me with another question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you and your friends are making favors for a charity party. you make a profit of half a dollar per favor. how many must you sell to make a profit of at least $250? write and solve an inequality

OpenStudy (anonymous):

call the number of favors you sell 'x'. how much profit do you make if you sell 'x' favors?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2x<250?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

forget the inequality and 250 for a minute

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how much profit do you make on one favor?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

.50

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so how much would you make on 2 favors?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how much on 4 favors?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and how much on X favors?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont know what x is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

.50

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how did you compute the amount you made on 4 favors?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i multiplied .50 by 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so you do the exact same thing if there are 'X' favors, even if you don't know what 'X' is yet. just multiply 0.50 by X instead of multiplying it by 4.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but x has to be a number if it has to be multiplied you cant multiply just x unless x equaled like 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what i'm about to say is going to blow your mind. You CAN multiply x by something even if it's not a number. If you multiply X by 4, for example, you get "4X".

OpenStudy (anonymous):

"4x" just means "4 multiplied by x"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh duh is it just liek multiplying 4 and 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah exactly

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so now, if I tell you that you sell 'X' favors, how would you write the amount of money you made?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so .50x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

YES! that's awesome!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So now you've told me that if you sell X favors, the amount of money you'll make is 0.50X. So now one last part, you want that amount of money you make to be greater than 250. so now write the whole inequality?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

.50x<250

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you're so close. remember that "<" means "less than". ">" means "greater than"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you want the amount you make to be greater than 250

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and 0.50x is the amount you make

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just kidding .50x>250

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would it be greater than and waqual to or just greater than

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep you got it. greater than or equal vs. greater than just depends on what the problem asked for. did it ask for the profit to be greater than 250, or greater than or equal to 250?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just greater than i guess

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep. now solve for x by dividing both sides by 0.50.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

500

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yup thats it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there you go. i'm proud of you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea thanks by the way im in the lower math class couldnt you tell

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i had no idea what grade you were in, you could be in a low math class of 10th grade or a really high math class of 5th:-)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

low math class of 8th

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but thanks anyway

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well it's all good
