When -7 is divided by 5, what is the quotient? what is the remainder?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Quotient is 0? remainder is -7?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

quotient is -1 remainder is -2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[-7=-1\times 5 -2\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thats what I put on my test and it was marked wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or if you like \[-7=-2\times 5+3\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

maybe your teacher wants remainders between 0 and 4, in which case the remainder would be 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How can there be two different answers?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Its a pretty simple question lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And now all of the sudden its quite confusing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

got distracted sorry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i guess you need the remainder to be positive. so if you are dividing by say 11 the only remainders you can have are the integers 0 through 10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Since \( -7 \equiv 3 \pmod 5 \) ,hence \( 3 \) is the remainder.
