Find two numbers that multiply to be -3 and add to be 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay now how do I that

OpenStudy (lilg132):

well think what two numbers multiply to give you -3?

OpenStudy (lilg132):

i'll give you the answer for this so you know what i mean because there is x^2 there will be two x's one in each bracket with the one of the two products the two numbers that multiply to give you -3 are +3 * -1 = -3 and when you add them -1 + 3 = 2 or +2 and we know we need two x's to give us x^2 so the two brackets will now looks like (x + 3) (x - 1) = 0 and we now know what the two values for x are because you rearrange the formula by opening one of the brackets so the first bracket will mean x is x = -3 and if you open the second bracket it will mean x = 1 those are the two answers remember to click good answer and also you can use quadratic formula to work it out also
