if the first derivative (the slope) around a point is becoming more positive then you know you have a minimum point, also if your first derivative is decreasing around a point you know you have a maximum point. also, where the slope is equal to zero and you have signs switched on both sides is the inflection point. if the second derivative (the rate of change of the slope) is positive then the graph is concave upwards, also if your second derivative is negative then the graph is concave downwards.
