why is the smooth muscle cell shaped the way it is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think the muscle's shape allows it to be stretched, making its task be performed which is to contract the hollow organs of the body i.e. the blood vessels, bladder, intestine, stomach.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The smooth muscle cell is spindle shaped to allow flexibility. It is an involuntary type of tissue. It is found in many internal organs. Like anne says, it is to provide flexibility to contract and relax the walls of the organs. Note: It is NOT found in the heart.
