Help me with these exclusion problems please....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How do you do these?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

You look for values that cause the denominator to be zero and exclude them.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you help me pleeeaase?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

So is the denominator is x^2-1 which is (x-1)(x+1) then it is clear that x cannot be 1 or -1 because both would cause the denominator to be zero. Also if the denominator is x^2-y^2 which is the same as (x-y)(x+y) then it is clear that x cannot be y or -y because the denominator would then be zero. So we will exclude these 4 values of x: 1, -1, y, -y

Huh?
