Algebra.Polynomials What is the constant in the polynomial 8x^4– 3x^2– 5x + 9? a. 8 b. -3 c. -5 d. 9 answer c.-5 ????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

d. 9

OpenStudy (pokemon23):

its 9 its a coefficient

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the constant is the number that doesn't change. the variable, x, is the number that can vary, therefore variable. if any number is multiplied with the variable, that will also vary accordingly, therefore the only number not affect by the variable, is 9, the constant.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The constant is always the term that is not followed by anything else. IN this case, 9 is the only one that is not followed by an x. It is the constant in this equation. While the other terms change when x values are plugged in, 9 will not change

nice well explained answers @pokemon, @tandais, and @nevin

OpenStudy (pokemon23):

:) one sentence giggity giggity goo

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The constant is always the sum of the terms term that is not followed by the independent variable.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Subtracting polynomials is like subtracting integers; I need to add the opposite. (change the signs of all terms in the 2nd row) its TRUE or FALSE

OpenStudy (pokemon23):

True
