Solve the absolute value inequality: |x - 6| > 2
x > 8?
:c no.
x>8 x>4
|x-6| > 2 implies x - 6 > 2 and -(x-6) > 2. In the first case x-6 > 2 => x > 8 In the second case, -(x-6) > 2 => -x+6 > 2 => -x > -4 => x < 4 Therefore |x-6| > 2 for x > 8 or x < 4
what?
This makes complete sense if you think geometrically what |x-6| means. Draw a number line, mark off +6. The x such that |x-6| > 2 means x which are more than 2 away from 6. If x is more than 2 away from 6, then x > 8 or x < 4.
how do u do the ablsoute value sign james? i waanted to show how to solve it but i couldn't find the sign
|x-6| > 2 means that EITHER x-6 is positive and hence |x-6| = x-6 > 2 OR x-6 is negative and hence |x-6| = -(x-6) > 2
I really still don't understand...
draw a number line as I describe and figure out where x can be.
... I don't know.
I'll make you a pic. one minute
Here ...
I don't get it.
What is the definition of |x| ?
I don't know.
what do you not understand
Oh, that's a big problem then, isn't it? You can't solve an equation that you just don't understand.
Have you discussed |x| in class?
and do you have a text book?
No and no. :c
absolute value of x. its the distance from zero right james?
In that case, how does your teacher expect you to solve this problem? And what is it with people not having text books these days?
ikr!
I'm going to point you to some Khan Academy videos that will teach this to you. Spend some time with them, watch them several times at your own pace. One sec.
do you remember what your teacher taught u? tell us everything u remember
There's four or more videos here on this topic. Watch them, watch them again, and you'll pick it up. Here's the first one: http://www.khanacademy.org/video/absolute-value-1?playlist=Algebra%20I%20Worked%20Examples The next videos you can click to in the top right of the video.
I'm taking a test right now and I don't have a test book because i'm in a virtual school.
you're asking us to help you with a test question?
u aren't cheating r u?
NO. I just want someone to explain how to do this so I can answer 5 questions.
Watch the videos. this is too complicated a topic to explain to you here if you've never seen it before. I'm not trying to blow you off; just telling you the truth.
also, the Khan Academy videos come with exercises; do those so you know whether or not you're understanding.
how about we show u a sample question not from your test but just a random one. james can u get a sample one? i cant find the absolute value sign
chto?
