is it possible to get pregnant a woman if she have a very small egg cell? in comparison a normal egg cell would be like a size of an ostrich but what if it was a size of a quil egg?
what the hell? a normal egg cell is NOT the size of an ostrich's have u lost ur marbles dude?
The larger the egg the larger the surface area which improves probability of fertilization. Placental mammals require a relatively large egg as humans have because it must contain enough nutrients to fuel the initial cell divisions to build the embryo, the ability to fuse to the uterine lining, form a placenta, etc. Our sperm, as males are very small and compact. Sperm are nothing more than a shuttle of genetic code, with just enough nutrients to make it to the egg cell, and if they fail to do that they die within a few days inside of a female.
I think Rico is just using the comparison as a proportional example . . . not literally ostrich and quail egg sizes.
Is egg size at ovulation related to maturity of egg and readiness for being fertilized?
You're thinking of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oogenesis shg. On another note I think ricor is just trolling, as I just looked at his other questions and it appears he is asking about the condition of the universe before the big bang, is a neutrino really faster than light, an engine with 100% efficiency and now this egg question. Though these are all questions kids in school would ask and he is a school teacher in the Phillipines. Makes me realize how hard it is being a teacher when kids ask you questions you haven't even really considered before.
Hard being a teacher altogether. I couldn't do it. Thanks for the re-direct. Not a topic I am especially interested in, just stumbled into this site looking for classes in new on-line offerings. I like it that Rico takes his students' questions seriously and tries to find answers for them (if you're right about what he's doing.)
What classes are you looking at studying on-line? I am finishing up my last few classes in a B.S. Computer Science and I am preparing for graduate studies in Bioinformatics so I am using this site to self-study the Life Sciences and to re-fresh my self in Calculus.
I am specifically looking for nutrition. Working on deficiencies in my undergraduate degree so I can apply to nursing school. A friend posted a NY Times link about MIT's online program so I am looking. I am committed to preparing for the GRE this semester and don't want to be tied to class times so on-line would be great for me right now.
i am asking the question regarding the possiblity of being pregnant if you have a very small egg cell (like a size of quail egg when being compared with) the normal egg cell(compare to ostrich egg size). I notice that a woman with polycystic ovarian syndrome has varied condition and one of them is releasing a very small egg cell. anyway tnx to all your reply it helps anyway
