write an algebraic expression for the given quantity. let x represent the unknown value.a value diminished by three.
what does "diminished by" mean in math?
what is the algabraic expression?
to figure that out first tell me how to write "a diminished by three" in symbols...
it should be subtraction.
right as Zeerak said "diminished by" means minus so what are we subtracting from what?
x-3
actually is says "x" is something called "a" diminished by three so not quite...
first write out "a" diminished by three mathematically
a-3
right and it seems to say that that is represented by x so how would we write that? though reading over it does sound a little strange... I hope we have interpreted it right, otherwise zeerak was correct the first time.
x=a-3
right, that's what I think it is
...but the wording of your question is a little strange, is it "let 'x' represent the unknown 'a' value diminished by three." or "let x represent the unknown value, a value diminished by three". ??? if it is the first then this is the right answer. If it is the second then Zeerak had it right the first time
I actually read this as: x - 3 = 0 i.e. x is a value that is diminished (i.e. disappears) by taking 3 away from it.
never would've thought of that @asnaseer.
