OpenStudy (anonymous):

certain cells of all of the following organisms undergomeiosis EXCEPT: ferns fungi sponges bacteria nematodes

OpenStudy (blues):

The only organisms which can undergo meiosis are multicellular ones. So which is the only one on the list which is NOT multicellular...?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

duh... thank you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait... how can bacteria NOT undergo meiosis? the undergo asexual reproduction, so wouldn;t that mean that for them it would be nothing BUT meiosis onstead of mitosis?

OpenStudy (blues):

Bacteria undergo asexual reproduction through mitosis. What is sexual about one cell dividing into two daughter cells?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well the way i understand it is that anything that is asexual, automatically falls under the "meiosis" category as it were

OpenStudy (blues):

You don't get it then. Meiosis is when a gamete replicates its DNA and divides twice to produce 4 haploid gametes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and i understand that; that's just the way my ap teacher was teaching it. is that incorrect? because i believe i'm being led int a fallacy

OpenStudy (blues):

Well the haploid gametes then meet other haploid gametes (when egg meets sperm) and combine to form a new diploid embryo. And that is sexual reproduction. You can see why only multicellular organisms can undergo meiosis, I hope.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah. i get it now. thank you
