Emily brought some money on a trip to the aquarium. She used half of the money to buy an admission ticket. Then, she $8 used to buy lunch at the food court. She used 3/4 of what was left to buy a souvenir, leaving her with . How much money did Emily take to the aquarium?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Let the total money be x. 0.5x + 0.75(0.5x) + 8 = x You'll get the answer if you solve this.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hmmmm is the first term correct? Does 0.5x mean half her money or does it mean half of the money she has left? I think we need to fix this.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well it is on working problems backwards if that helps any?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0.5 x means half the money. You can also write it as x/2.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Am I right meverett?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

another copy and paste fail.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then, she $8 used to buy lunch at the food court. She used 3/4 of what was left to buy a souvenir, leaving her with ????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's not what you should find.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The answer is approximately 64.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I agree with satellite, can we look at the question again? pratu unfortunately 0.5x is not half of the original money, it is 0.5 of the ending money.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you!! @pratu043

OpenStudy (anonymous):

welcome

OpenStudy (anonymous):

at the risk of repeating myself, and pratu's answer notwithstanding, there is a copy and paste failure here. how much money she is left with determines how much she started with, and that came up as a blank space in the question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well it was a muti. choice answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and not to be rude but in fact pratu's answer is simply wrong.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what mistake did I make?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay then i could be 50/50 what do you think?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok one more time when you copied and pasted the question here, one piece was missing. look at this line here leaving her with . there should be a number between the "with" and the "."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

one sec.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

leaving her with $100? leaving her with $1? leaving her with 1 cent?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh i see... leaving her with $4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh, so it must be 8 + 4?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes,
