Can anyone explain how i would update a topdir file in linux?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is topdir file?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It was a varible I had to get someone to define for me, here is a link to the instalation instructions i'm attempting to install. http://www.xcrysden.org/doc/install.html

have u tried this? After unpacking the *.tar.gz archive-file, each user should define two environmental variables: XCRYSDEN_TOPDIR and XCRYSDEN_SCRATCH. This can be facilitated by the xcConfigure script which in addition asks some questions and configures the package accoring to user's wishes. From XCrySDen root directory execute: ./xcConfigure

Well my father did this part but he did it for the wrong source code (64bit insteat of 32) so i emailed the developer and he sent me the link to the code i need. So now what i'm guessing i need to do is have the XCRYSDEN_TOPDIR point to the new source code. However, I have no idea how to go about doing such a thing. Here is a link of the varible with it pointing to the old source code: XCRYSDEN_TOPDIR=/XCrySDen-1.5.25-bin-shared I am not really sure how to go about adjusting that to point to the new code which is saved on my desktop.

alright thanks

OpenStudy (rsmith6559):

If each user has to define those variables, check your .bash* files in your home directory.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

After I have located the file what is the command to modify the root file It says to point it too?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sudo gedit filename

OpenStudy (rsmith6559):

You can edit it with a plain text editor, NOT a wordprocessor. As a general rule, if you can select a font for a particular line, don't use it. Thomas.A gave a valid command (substitute the filename for filename). If it's in your home directory, you won't need sudo (SuperUserDO). pico would be a simple editor that would work too.

root file probably wont be in home directory or it can?
