How do you find y-intercept?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

set x=0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I dont have an x. i have y=8x+ something. i need the 'something'. my two points were (2,20) (3,28)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

see first put in th first pair of numbers as x and y to find that 'something'

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What do you mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lets say uve got y=8x+b now substitute x=2 , y=20 20=8(2) + b b=4 now uve got y=8x+4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now set x=0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh i get it! Thanks much.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and infact in the form y=mx+b b is always the y-intercept...think it this way..that on the y-axis , x is always zero, and so thats the condition u use to find it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhhh !

OpenStudy (mathmate):

You can also do it by arithmetic progression, no paper required: (3,28),(2,20) (1,12),(0,4) So 4 is the y-intercept.
