what is the difference between mitosis and meiosis?
Mitosis is whereby a cell splits into two identical cells. During mitosis each new cell receives the exact number of chromosomes as the cell from which it originated. & the mitosis only happens during Asexual reproduction. Meiosis is a cell division whereby one cell divides into four new cells (gametes). Unlike mitosis, gametes produced during meiosis contain half the number of chromosomes of the parent cell. & the meiosis only happens in sexual reproduction.
During mitosis, the number of chromosomes remains constant to avoid accumulation of genetic material. Mitosis occurs in cells undergoing asexual reproduction, i.e., in any somatic cell of the human body. During meiosis, since sexual reproduction takes place with gametes, half the chromosomes are received from either parent. Mitosis is also known as reductional division while meiosis is called additional division.
