OpenStudy (anonymous):

why are arteries thicker than veins...both are under equal pressure near heart right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no they are not. arterial pressure is around 120/80 (systole diastole) . venous pressure is 0-5, even near the heart. the valves in the heart - and specfically the tricuspid between the right atrium and right room enable the buildup of pressure when the chamber contracts

OpenStudy (blues):

What Ttom said about the pressure difference. And arteries are thicker than veins because they need to withstand the higher blood pressure.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cuz the blood flowing through them is at higher pressure there fore they need tobe thicker to withstand more pressure.
