What computer tools i.e. Calculators, software, programming languages, whatever do Real Mathematicians (tm) use?

OpenStudy (across):

Where I work, we use Maple.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they use chalkboard

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I've seen MATLAB code on a prof's desktop once

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I've seen whiteboard*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't think they really use chalk/whiteboards so much these days; only to teach us kids :-D

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Some people still use blackboard and chalk!

OpenStudy (mathmate):

It's a good tool for discussions.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

chalkboard has really good freehand graphic feature

OpenStudy (anonymous):

even with all those advanced CAS tools, MATLAB, graphing calculators (which are like pocket MATLABs), scientific computing libraries, Excel, etc?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hey I do have a whiteboard next to me.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't have a whiteboard :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's useful for so many things ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but I don't think they use whiteboards to run their Monte Carlo simulations.... do they?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Of course, people never use it for that.

OpenStudy (turingtest):

I think you need the whiteboard to work out what you want your program to do...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

who needs whiteboards when you have emacs !

OpenStudy (turingtest):

well, not /need/ but...

OpenStudy (across):

Talking about macs, would you guys recommend a macbook pro?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

emacs?

OpenStudy (across):

I was looking at some this afternoon.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you meen the editing program.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Mean.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't know across.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can not draw weird pictures on Emacs

OpenStudy (turingtest):

I feel like her picture new is giving me an attitude...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

We use maple at the university

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you can write fancy macros that draw ASCII graphics on emacs... at least I think you can (even play hack and rogue in it)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I've only seen Mathematica, and only heard of Maple

OpenStudy (mathmate):

I thought emacs is a 40 year old text editing program at the same age as vi.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It is mathmate, even older!

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Thanks!
