OpenStudy (anonymous):

Are overfishing (changing the fish population) and infection (causing whales to get sick) BIOTIC factors, or ABIOTIC factors?(choose one) I think its abiotic.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well i think ur right, but the infection, the reason why they getting sick, is biotic- but they decreasing so i think ur right, not sure though -( I would like to know what is correct when you get it back, kay?)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you please help me with my question?

OpenStudy (blues):

Biotic refers to whether or not the factors are effected by living things, so in the end it comes down to a subjective decision about what is and is not a 'living factor.' Overfishing is hard. People really don't fish for whales. I came up in a marine biology program so I should know. Whales get caught in fishing gear left in the water for other species so in as far as they're killed by nets and nets aren't living, the factor is abiotic. In as much as people put the nets in the water and are actually controlling the fishing, it is biotic. People, perhaps surprisingly, count as living things. Infection is much clearer. It is caused by bacteria (or technically viruses and for the purpose of this discussion I'm going to assume that viruses are considered 'living' organisms) so it is a biotic factor. Plain and simple.

OpenStudy (faman39):

it is abiotic factor

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is a biotic factor
