How do you tell people that in legal authority over you that their ways are not your ways, and yet they continue to force you/lord over you?
That's too vague to answer from a biological standpoint I'm afraid. Are you having a dispute with your parents or is this a political issue between a country's government and its constituents?
both actually. My mum is a lawyer and is constantly putting me down simply because i am artistic. she says art has no place in the future and that evolution will cast me aside like so many other artists. The government has the same attitude towards artists.
This is something I whole heartedly agree with you on. It's your life and your choice. If your mom doesn't approve, then turn that anger or frustration into doing more art. Maybe next time she's telling you that art is worthless, just pull out a piece of paper and start drawing! When it comes down to it, it doesn't matter what you do as long as you have passion and do what you love. Who cares if you're rich or poor as long as you're happy? But don't forget that being a good artist takes lots of study of the human figure, other artists, color theory, and lots of time sitting down and sketching, drawing, painting, whatever. I suggest you watch one or both of the following which address the topic and are pretty freakin' interesting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iG9CE55wbtY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86x-u-tz0MA I'm sorry to hear you're in this dilemma but all I can say is that you just need to stand up for what you want.
This forum is really a place to post biology and science questions. Not questions about relationships with your parents. That said, I'm really sorry that your mother doesn't support your goals and aspirations. Art definitely does have a place in the future. Without art and people who produce it, society is a long way toward being lost. Your mother knows how hard it is to put a roof over your head and put food on your table. Do you even know how much - in money - it takes her to feed you each week? Have you ever even wondered that? Reality is, you'll one day have to feed yourself. Where will that money come from when she's not providing it for you any more? If you're seriously a good enough artist to be self supporting in an age when the vast majority of people care a lot more about shuffling off to work each day and making enough to meet the bills than about art, kudos to you. If not, you're in for a spectacularly, bitterly hard life. A lot of people like art because it's entirely subjective, unlike math or science where there is actually a wrong answer. They hear they're good artists from their high school art teachers and art profs in college - then they step out into the real world and find they're not good enough. They also find themselves bagging groceries for ten hours a day because they have no real qualifications for earning a wage except waving a paint brush at a piece of canvas and waiting for it to be admired. Your mother knows that. Perhaps she's not trying to belittle what you like because she disapproves of it, but because she's concerned about the very real problem of you supporting yourself in a stagnant economy. These days, what with declining standards in higher education and a sour job market, that goes as much for scientists as it does for artists.
