the ratio of your weight on earth to your weight on mars is 5 to 2. If youweight 120 Ib on Earth, how much would you weigh on Mars?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it's 48lb. 5x 24 = 120. So using 24 as your factor, just multiply 2x24 = 48...

thanks

In fact, you can generalize this result. Suppose you start with a ratio: x:y (you started with 5:2). And suppose you are given data, X relevant to one side of your ratio (in your example X=120lbs was relevant to the left hand side of the ratio 5:2, i.e. the ' Earth side'). Then to get your factor, just do X/x. Then multiply your ratio by this factor: (X/x)x : y(X/x) which is equivalent to X : y(X/x). Try this last one with X = 120, x = 5, y=2.
