OpenStudy (sasogeek):

what is the difference between zero (0) and nothing?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1 is a word expression the other is a numeric expression ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait no

OpenStudy (wasiqss):

like c in electrochemistry , we use hydrogen as a reference electrode, , it is a standard of comparison, like in 0 , its a standard of comaprison, like above it r positive integers, below it negative integers

OpenStudy (sasogeek):

that's not the answer... i want the difference, and btw ur first answer "1 is a word expression the other is a numeric expression ?" is wrong, i learnt the difference some time ago, though i forgot, that's not the answer u provided, i'm sure it'll come to memory once i see it...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0 is still representing some value of nothing there is still a value nothing states nothing at all

OpenStudy (anonymous):

btw i was correcting myself

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Imagine there's a certain maths class, and in this class there's a fiendishly difficult 100-point midterm, and imagine that neither you nor I get even one point out of 100 on this exam. Except there's a difference: you are not in the class and didn't even take the exam, whereas I am and did. The fact that you received 0 points on the exam was thus irrelevant—your 0 means N/A, nothing—whereas my 0 is an actual zero. Or if you don't like that one, imagine that you and I are respectively female and male, both healthy 20-40 years of age, and we're both at the doctor's, and neither of us has had a menstrual period in the past ten weeks, in which case my total number of periods is nothing, whereas yours here is 0—and significant.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

OpenStudy (sasogeek):

my zero means I had no mark, your zero means you had no mark... what do u mean? whether i was there or not, we both had no marks...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wadda bout my answer :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the second 1

OpenStudy (sasogeek):

what do u mean by an actual zero?

OpenStudy (sasogeek):

LOL idk about ur answer, it's quite funny though... mth4v4. looks like you're close to the answer, zero is a value of nothing. you could say there's nothing in the basket... nothing, but when u say there's zero oranges, you actually mean there's no orange in it, value of quantity. nothing has nothing to do with quantity... it's just blank

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but since its still saying a value of 0 number of fruit

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you still know how much fruit there is by a denotation of the number

OpenStudy (sasogeek):

when we said there's nothing in the basket, we weren't specifying fruits...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nothing is clearly nothing nothing at all

OpenStudy (sasogeek):

but once we said zero something, we are talking about the quantity of fruit in it, nothing could have been anything...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Let us suppose there are 4 apples in the basket. In that case, you can say that the basket contains zero oranges but you can't say that the basket contains nothing.

OpenStudy (sasogeek):

exactly

OpenStudy (anonymous):

some number of things in the basket

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the number is 0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0 number of what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

empty set {} nothing has zero elements where as a set {0} has one element the zero. zero is a number. nothing is an empty set.

OpenStudy (sasogeek):

i concur, a number REPRESENTING nothing of something, nothing is an empty set... i guess we're done here, time for medal party!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this was a fun argument

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i gtg to bed now :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

gn ppls
