Did anyone heard about "Vacuum Decay"?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes. The idea is that the vacuum of space isn't really empty, it's a seething mass of particles popping into and out of existence. A "true" vacuum is one which has no particles whatsoever, and the thought goes that once a "bubble" of true vacuum exists, it will expand at light-speed and any normal matter encountering it's edge will disintegrate. It's just a theory, however, and I suspect that it's far more likely that we'll get wiped out by a nearby quasar shining on us directly. But I'm not losing too much sleep over that one either.
